Day 057: Making progress… finally…

Feb 26 2008

So last weekend we went out for a nice 3 mile hike on Saturday and Sunday we meant to go kayak, but I think Nicole over did it. She wasn’t feeling well so we decided to skip or planned paddle.

Today I weighed myself and I am happy to say it showed 324.6!! I don’t know what I am doing, but something finally seems to be working. While my progress is slower that I had hoped. Now I am just hoping I can keep going.

Day 053: A bit under the weather…

Feb 22 2008

There is something going around the office and by the time I got home yesterday I wasn’t feeling too well. So I decided to scrap my workout plans and just relax.

I didn’t lose any weight this week, but I didn’t gain any either.

Day 051: Slow and steady…

Feb 20 2008

I hit the stairs again yesterday. It always seems to be harder on Tuesdays. I also lifted weights in the evening. I skipped doing leg work because of doing the stairs. No reason to over do it.

I have decided to take Wednesdays off. That being said I plan on heading back out to the Greenbelt this weekend and I also plan to finally get out and do some paddling.

So my new exercise schedual looks like this:

Monday: Stairs, Resistance Training (Chest, Biceps, and Shoulders)

Tuesday: Stairs, Resistance Training (Back, Triceps, Abs)

Wednesday: Rest Day

Thursday: Stairs, Resistance Training (Chest, Biceps, and Shoulders)

Friday: Stairs, Resistance Training (Back, Triceps, Abs)

Saturday: Hike, Bike, or Paddle (if all else fails walk on the treadmill for 30 mins)

Sunday: Hike, Bike, or Paddle (if all else fails walk on the treadmill for 30 mins)

Day 050: Officially back on track…

Feb 19 2008

Ok I give up I am just going to write these posts in the morning or at lunch and they will be about the previous day. So I skipped day 49 which was yesterday, but I am going to write about it today day 50… hopefully it’s not too confusing… I would hate to even confuse myself.

Yesterday I walked the stairs and I lifted weights. I have made a change to the way I am lifting. Instead of doing 3 sets of 5-6 reps of the heaviest weight I can handle I am doing 4-5 sets of 12 reps of a lighter weight. The hope is this will give me some muscle, but also endurance. To me it’s not so important to be big or shredded, but to have good functional muscles I can use while hiking, biking, or kayaking.

My diet was spot on. They only thing I could on improved upon was rest. I need to get to bed earlier.

Today I woke up, got on the scale and I was at 327.6. I know it has said I have been at 327.6 for a while now, but for the past few weeks the scale has been showing higher numbers. I just haven’t done an official weigh-in in a while. So I am officially back on track.

Days 47 & 48: Weekend Update….

Feb 18 2008

Well some how I managed to lose some weight this weekend. I ate pretty poorly although I did try using some restraint while eating out. However we were active most of the weekend. Saturday we spent learning to shoot pistols. Sunday we went to the Barton Creek Greenbelt and walked for about 2 miles.

Which got me thinking that I have been spending a lot of time focusing on diet, but very little on exercise. For a guy my size I think this is a critical error. If I watch what I eat but don’t exercise and I make one mistake it derails me. If I eat just a little bit less or the same as what I was eating before and I exercise I will lose weight. You can always make up a missed gym session, but you can’t take back something you’ve already ate.

That being said the ultimate goal is to have both a good diet and a good exercise regime. For the next 4-6 weeks I am going to exercise 5-6 days a week and maintain my current diet. Currently I have a few different meals I bring for lunch and snacks, but dinner is kind of whatever is made for me. And weekends tends to be a free for all. I will use some more restraint on the weekends, but my focus is going to be on being active.

Let’s see where that gets me.

Day 045: Happy Valentines Day!!

Feb 14 2008

Today was a bit crazy we had a lot of “issues” come up at work and I didn’t get home till just before 9pm. It’s Valentines Day so I asked Nicole if she would like me to pick up some dinner on the way home. We agreed on appetizers from Chili’s. So I splurged a bit on dinner. Just means I will have to be good all weekend.

I did do stairs again today. It seemed harder for some reason.

P.S. since I did spurge on dinner tonight I am going to use my weight from this morning for my weekly weigh in.

Day 044: Back on track…

Feb 13 2008

I am posting this the morning of the 14th… I fell asleep before I had a chance to post last night.

As much as they suck I really like doing the stairs during the day it gives me more energy and even if I don’t have time to work out later in the day I feel like at least I did something. Today Ben, Kearney, and I did two “laps” of 6 flights stairs. My quads were burning and I was winded… it felt good.

My diet this week has been decent. I need to come up with a dinner meal plan. At the moment I am eating whatever Nicole makes for us which isn’t always very healthy, but it’s usually not too bad. I also need to work on my weekend meals… Weekends have been a trouble spot for me. I have been trying to stay busy on the weekends, but that also has lent itself to me grabbing fast food on the go which is counter productive.

Day 043: One step at a time… literally…

Feb 12 2008

So tonight I had another “event” to attend after work however unlike last night there was no beer fueled snacking afterwards. I didn’t have the time to work out since I didn’t get home until 10:30 pm.

Earlier in the day I was having a chat with Brian and he suggested just walking the stairs at work for 10-15 mins . So this afternoon at a point when I was in a bit of a slump I grabbed Kearney and hit the stairs. We did from the basement to the 4th floor twice. Well he did it twice I only made it to the 3rd floor the 2nd time. It was a decent little work out and it got the heart rate up. I think next time (tomarrow?) I will pace myself a bit more.

Day 042: Everybody stumbles…

Feb 11 2008

So last week was one big stumble followed by a face plant. It’s definately a humbling feeling. I definately survived January, but I have yet to find my rhythm. Now that things have settled down at work and I have my work out room in place I am looking forward to powering through what’s left of February.

I did pretty good today. Until I went to the South by Southwest mixer… I had a couple beers which lead to some Taco Cabana. Damn you free drink tickets!!!

Day 037: No one said it was going to be easy…

Feb 06 2008

So I do great when everything goes as planned, but as soon as I hit a bump in the road I go off the rails. It’s a very frustrating feeling. I have gone off the rails… and now I need to get back on, but I also need to figure out a way to deal with non optimal situations. At the moment when the shit hits the fan I go running back to what I know which is a not healthy diet.

Anyway life should be getting back to normal for a while. I will keep you updated.
