It’s pretty easy to tell someone who wants to lose weight that they need to eat less, but how much less? More importantly how much should I be eating? If you just start cutting calories you are going to be hungry a lot and more than likely you’ll give up. About a year ago I lost 50 pounds and I was never hungry because I wasn’t overly restricting my calorie intake. So how do I figure out how many calories I should be eating?
The best way, in my opinion, to estimate how many calories I should be eating is by calculating my Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). BMR is how many calories you would need if you were completely at rest all day. There are several formulas for figuring BMR. The one I use is called the Harris-Benedict Formula.

I woke up this morning with a lot of discomfort in my lower back. Like a lot of people who are over weight I have lower back issues and being on my feet for 3+ hours yesterday cooking seems to have aggravated it. I sit for most of the day at work, so I am hopeful that my back will feel better and I will be able to workout tonight.

After dinner I headed over to Bed, Bath, and Beyond to return my second defective scale of the year. I lucked out and found the Thinner TH313 on the end cap of the scale aisle. I didn’t even see it when I went shopping on New Years Day. My old scale is a Thinner and it served me very well. The price was the same as the scale I was returning so I snatched it up.
I got home, tried it out, and it worked perfectly. The new Thinner scale also has body composition measurements and guess what? They actually work!!! Of course the results were a bit depressing, but at least it worked.
I have to give a big shout out to the folks over at my local Bed, Bath and Beyond for being very cool with all my returns.

I placed another order shortly after I placed my supplement order. My supplements haven’t arrived yet, but today I got the two Blender Bottles I ordered today. These look like normal shaker bottles, but they have a small wire ball inside that should really help mix up my protein shakes. My only fear is that I will end up losing the wire shaker balls. I wonder if they sell replacements?

While 2008 is still a week away… I am preparing for D-Day. I placed an order with At Large Nutrition for some Multi-Vitamins, Fish Oil capsules and Whey Protein mix. I also placed an order with Amazon for a Pur water filter to replace the one I pitched we moved. While there is nothing wrong with drinking tap water I think it has a bit of a funny taste. So I like to have a filter on the tap so I can fill up a Nalgene bottle and chill it in the fridge.
I cleaned out my water bottle tonight and tomorrow at work I am going to try to drink between 32 and 64 oz of water. Hopefully I will be able to shed a little water weight before D-day or unfortunately I will have to go buy a new scale. It seems I have surpassed the 330 pound mark which seems to be the magic number for a lot of scales.
I still have a lot of work to do on the site. So I am going to have to buckle down and set aside some time this weekend to finish everything up. I also need to get a game plan together for my diet and exercise. I have a decent idea of what I am going to be doing I just want to solidify on paper what it is I will be doing and eating in the month of January. I will probably be doing some tweaking here and there as the month progresses.
I also need to sort through some boxes to try and some of my work out stuff: gloves, heart rate monitor, exercise ball, etc.
